What’s your name and where are you from?
My name is James Hunter Simmons (I go by Hunter) and my artist/brand name is MVNIC and I am from Austin Texas.
What makes you different?
What makes me different as a person or an artist is my drive and integrity to carry out what I want to portray as a product. My musical background, from being in drum line in high school to being a drummer in bands all throughout the Austin music scene into building my own brand as a solo artist. I am self efficient and produce majority of my own material. I bring a lot of influences together from my roots and incorporate them with modern sounds. Whatever the new wave is, I am more than capable of bringing my own roots of influences and making them into something that is modern and fresh. The era of music is consistently changing and it is IMPORTANT to stay consistent with while being able to bring in influences AS LONG AS IT MAKES SENSE AND SELLS!
What do you wish to accomplish?
What I want to accomplish in life is to honestly fulfill my music career. It’s a cliche answer but I don’t care to live a lavish life, I just want to pay my bills and live a modest life and to help support my parents because they have been to hell and back for me. I want to sell records and I want to play sold out shows. I want to spread my name, I want to help others that have been in the same life situations as me and I want to be the voice for the people that feel like they don’t have one or that feel like they need permission to speak out when really they do not. Like I said I know it sounds cliche but I have dedicated my entire life to music and I am not implying that I deserve success, but I am saying that I will bang in as many doors until one opens up. I want to make my family proud and I want to feel like I didn’t waste my life chasing a dream when I KNOW I am more than capable of achieving it.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Where do I see myself in the next 5 years? Well I see myself putting out hit songs on billboard and influencing artists like the ones that influenced me. I see myself traveling and telling my story and it being heard and accepted, obviously not by everyone because music is subjective but enough to make an impact. I am sitting here in a one bedroom apartment in Austin Texas during a pandemic and barely getting by and typing this BUT I KNOW that in a year or even 2 years from now, things can look completely different. I see myself starting a family and also showing everyone that doubted me that I made it and that it is possible for anyone that has the same dream or goal. I wouldn’t invest so much time in music and go through all of these trial and errors if I didn’t believe in myself. I will make my family proud and I KNOW that I will make myself proud. One way or another, I will make it happen and I don’t need anyone’s approval.
What do you bring to the music world?
What I bring to the table in terms of the music world will be subjective. But what I know I can bring is a sound and message that is relevant to listeners all around the world, especially during this time. I will bring a message of persistence and consistency, and the sound of something that will inspire a new generation to keep moving forward and to not take no for an answer. I will bring a sound that reaches to an audience of any kind with lyrics that can help portray any message that isn’t just directly suitable for one singular audience. I believe music is a universal language and I intend to carry it out as such. I bring a different type of energy that I don’t see many artists bringing to the table and I know I can execute many ideas to keep the sound relevant and to keep it growing as the era of music continues to grow. I don’t believe in settling for less and I know what I have to offer is way more than what others have had and I know that one day I will be heard and someone will see the integrity and the hustle and will help me carry out my career to make such an impact.
What legacy do you wish to leave behind?
Now in terms of what legacy I wish to leave behind will all be self explanatory by the music I make. I pay homage to those that impacted me such as artists that are no longer with us today like Chester Bennington from Linkin park. Lil peep, Juice WRLD, Mac Miller, xxxtentacion, 2Pac and The Notorious BIG. I also pay homage to artists that are around right now like MGK, The Kid Laroi, Post Malone, and Iann Dior. With that being said, I wish for my music/message to carry on when I am long gone. I want people to hear my music and know that Even though they are one person sitting in a room full of a thousand “no’s” that there is always that one yes that will open a door to many possibilities. We all grow from a seed regardless of the season or soil we started from. I was in special Ed growing up all throughout my school years and I NEED people to know that whatever background you come from, it doesn’t matter. You can’t depend on God or the Universe to Open up doors for you, you are give the keys. It is just a matter of how much time and effort you are willing to invest in yourself to keep trying each door until one opens. It is no ones job to make changes happen for you. You have to believe in yourself enough to know that it will happen, and it may not be in the time that you planned but regardless it will happen. We all struggle with personal demons such as addictions or mental health or toxic relationships that make us feel like we are stuck in place but at the end of the day, we control our outcome. We are all limitless and we are all powerful enough to change our entire lives. That is the legacy that I want to leave behind. That is the legacy that SHOULD be left behind. We live in a world where people think they need to compare their lives to the next big thing or that we need approval and I want and NEED people to know, that is not the case. I struggle with panic disorder and severe anxiety and If I can find comfort into creating something that I am proud of then so could anyone else.
